http://www.apple.com/

Take a good look at the subhead beneath iPad. I had to read the sucker three times before "getting it".

And that's saying nothing of the name "iPad".

My thought: the iPad will flop something awful. The very fact that it costs as much as a netbook and does not allow multitasking is reason enough for the very audience that is most likely to purchase this product (i.e. power users) to say no.

If this product succeeds, it will do so wholly as the result of what developers are able to come up with for it.

Thoughts?

My thought: the iPad will flop something awful.

A friend of mine will be buying it the day it goes on sale... just like he has whenever a new iPhone is released.

I'm considering buying it for my better half.

Never bet against or count Apple out... like Michael Dell did:

It'll sell like hotcakes in December.

It's got a picture of an apple on it.

I'll never count out apple completely, but this piece of hardware is missing some VERY core features. To me, this is like the first iPhone... when it came out it was definitely VERY cool... but what REALLY clinched it for most people was the iPhone 3g. The iPhone 3G was what the first iPhone should have been.

I suspect that that will be what happens here. Personally, I WANT the iPad to do well. But I want it to do more...

I'm looking forward to the hardware I KNOW will come out, that will turn this thing into a legit netbook by giving you a proper enclosure. And frankly, when that comes out, I'll probably buy it. I LOVE the idea of it slipping into a holder and turning into a laptop, especially if the part where there's a keyboard gives the iPad ports and extra battery life.

But on that note, I am VERY curious to see how future macbooks are going to implement touch.

Lol, btw, when I posted this thread, I was almost positive Subtle would reply. Glad I wasn't disappointed!

While possible, Apple is probably not going to flop. You can neatly cut and paste the precise criticism from every major Apple success.

For example iPhone's lack of 3G support was a major reason (one of several) the iPhone would flop.

And who is doing the critique -- early adopters. Or, I should say, the classical early adopters: Geeks.

Who's buying? That market segment called the early majority. Completely different world views. Apple early adopters are less geek and more style/prestige early adopters.

Unfortunately being declared "dead on arrival" by the geek early adopter is a badge of honor. That badge reads approved for human consumption.

Such criticisms would, ordinarily, be dead on. However, these people generally overlook basic human factors design. Geeks give Apple zero credit for human factors because they are used to using klunky, kludgey technology on the cutting edge.

Apple innovations are not technology based. The scroll-wheel on the iPod? Not invented at Apple. It's all human centered interaction design. Simply incomprehensible to the technologist.

John,

I agree that the tendency is for geeks to say "no" to Apple products. But I'm a geek, and picked up the first iPhone, have gone through two macbook Pros, have an Apple time machine, keyboard, mouse, iPod, and convinced my girlfriend to get a Macbook as well.

I totally admire and appreciate technology I don't have to fiddle with. The problem to me is that right now the iPad is missing big features for me. With the iPhone, I didn't give a crap about EDGE vs. 3G because at the time, 3G coverage was abysmal. I also didn't care about multitasking because the screen was simply not big enough.

I also didn't care about input being hardcore, because if I need to have some serious input, I will get a full-sized keyboard and go to town. The limitations I was willing to overlook with the iPhone in exchange for a superior interface on a smaller screen are the same limitations I can't ignore with a larger screen.

About the only thing I can truly say I like is the idea of surfing the web on a big screen very easily.

I'll admit that my denouncing of the iPad is probably going to turn out to be way off base. But I had the same vibe when I saw the Macbook Air, and so far that device has not really impressed.

The one thing really going for this tablet is the price point. It's actually not at all bad, considering how much you get out of it. But at least for me, I will wait until iteration two to see what Apple REALLY had in store for its device. Apple has a distinct pattern: invent something awesome and remove key features, only to introduce them slowly over the next few versions.

It's freaking brilliant, but I'm patient enough to wait for a year or so to see what else Cupertino has up its sleeves.

I agree that the subhead sucks. Four adjectives in one sentence is a bit much.

For me the price isn't a selling point at all. It's twice the price of a netbook and you have to pay a separate monthly fee for your data plan in addition to your iPhone.

Apple doesn't follow most of the rules when it comes to copy. I think so much of their marketing it built into their products and they do a great job getting people to talk about their products whether they love it or hate it.

Personally, I think the first version of anything new always has some kinks to work out, but I like where they're going with this. It seems like a great introduction to the company for those who've stayed away from computers due to their complexity, and it does the job of many standalone products like media players, ebook readers, picture frames and portable game systems.

I was expecting to see this at a much higher price point, but starting at $500 I can see this selling pretty well. No, it's not something you'll want to type out a novel on - but with so much that can be done solely on the internet today - this could fill a real need for some people.

I'm more excited about the unlimited data plan for $30/monthly w/no contract and hope they'll soon build 3/4G wireless into their laptops.  Grin

That thing is so totally cool... I want one. I wonder how much you can store on it. It's so portable plus you can write on it with a pen. That more than cool. I'd give you a good rep point but I know you like those three numbers you're at. Grin

450,000 iPads sold since Saturday.

Estimates are for 5,000,000 to be sold in 2010.

I checked one out a couple of days ago. Very cool.

600,000 digital books downloaded from the Apple store since Saturday.

Subtle,

Yeah, I was looking at those stats... but they still don't look nearly as impressive when compared to other Apple launches which have outpaced the iPad's launch.

In any event, the new iPhone OS 4 addresses most of the issues I had with it... in particular, the multitasking support.

iPhone OS 4 actually looks pretty cool.
